J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm LTD have sent out a joint press release today announcing the release of a stand alone Jar Jar Binks film entitled, “Jar Jar: Return Of The Gungan”.
The press release is widely regarded as an attempt to quell fan backlash after this past weekends release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The picture has been considered by many to be a failure at the box office and most point to the omission of Jar Jar Binks from the movie. Abrams originally defended the decision saying, “Jar Jar is such an iconic character in the Star Wars mythos, actually in motion pictures in general. We did not want to overshadow the main characters in this new trilogy with his presence. Though consideration was given to having him appear in the closing moments of this film, we felt that idea was lame.”
Fans were outraged upon learning there favorite Star Wars character did not make the cut, “When I seen Jar Jar was not on the posters I and many others just assumed he would be in it and they were trying to get the other characters exposed. Mesa very upset.” said longtime Star Wars fan Nick Little of Hoboken, New Jersey.
Star Wars super fan Edward Poe has threatened to boycott the series until the Jar Jar film is released. He was asked if he be willing to watch another installment without the loveable Gungan, to which he replied, “I’d rather kiss a Wookie”, We aren’t sure what that means, but it sounds like disdain to this reporter.
Billy Madison of Trent, Iowa said it could have been worse, “At least they didn’t bring him back and kill him off in a cheap attempt at edginess like some studios would.”
Jar Jar: Return Of The Gungan is expected to hit theaters in 2017. Will the movie be too late to save the struggling franchise? For the studios it is a new hope.
